AAGARD, Eugene J. 81st Division, 322nd Regiment. He was a Technical Sergeant when he was wounded on Anguar. He was eventually promoted to First Sergeant. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He resides in Levan. UT.

ALLISON, James Byron, Pvt. K Company, Third Battalion, First Regiment, First Marine Division. He was one of the thousands of Marines who stormed the beaches of Peleliu on Sept. 15, 1944. He was a "runner" and carried messages from Platoon to Company. He was in the Peleliu campaign for "about a month", to quote him, and was then sent back to Pavuvu with his Division for replacements and training for the invasion of Okinawa. James B. Allison died on October 12, 1996, of lung cancer, in Red Lodge, Montana. He was a proud Marine to the end.

ANDERSON, Loyall (Pete) David. One of the first to land. He talked Little about Peleliu, however, on rare occasions when he actively Exercised his elbow a story would come out. He was sitting in a cave, alone, when a Japanese soldier entered, naked. Pete had to throw his canteen as it was his closest weapon. The Japanese ran to the nearest ridge. 321 RCT people began firing at the Japanese alternately from one side of the ridge, then the other. When the Japanese was near safety both sides opened up basically evaporating the enemy. Pete received a Bronze Star for action that was not discussed. Family contact: scimike@citlink.net

BENGTSSON, Charles Lewis. 81st Infantry Division, U.S. Army. Chuck was in the 154th Combat Engineers Bn., which cleared a landing strip for bombers on the small island of Anguar in the Palau group. While there, they were sent to assist Marines in their invasion of Pelelieu. After R & R in New Caledonia, his group was sent to the Philippine Islands, and then from there, they were headed to Japan when the A-bomb was dropped. After that, they were sent to Northern Japan. Chuck finished his service there, and returned to California in 1946. Chuck was drafted right out of high school. As of 10/99 Chuck is 75 years old and is in good health. The only info he ever relayed of his experience was that he was WIA by "friendly (mortar) fire" and that he was the only man to survive this incident out of 12 men. I believe he was an ammo bearer and was WIA on a "hill". He was also the recipient of the Bronze Medal. * BIRON, Robert A. "Bob", Pfc. In the 11th Marines, he fought in the Pacific Theater. Now deceased, his legacy of service to our country Lives on in the hearts of his daughter Jayne and grandchildren. He was a wonderful man, a great husband, father, and grandpa. He was a hard worker, a devout catholic, and a true American hero. He never went by a church or a flag without bowing his head. He loved his country passionately. He was buried with full military honors. Until the day he died, he always wore a small flag tie clip on his person. He willed his footlocker (still filled with all his possessions, as if he needed to be prepared to report for active duty!) and his uniforms, to his daughter's sons. Bob was shot in the leg during the war, possibly on Peleliu. The hospital caring for him was bombed during an airstrike and all his medical records were lost before the war ended. The 2nd platoon had high casualties and lasted only two days on the island. My Dad received the Purple Heart for his wounds, the shrapnel in his leg not being fully removed until 1959. Buddy kicked the grenade, saving the others, but received a mortal shrapnel wound to the head. He was awarded the Silver Star posthumously. Buddy was just 18 years old.

* BROWN Sr., W.A., Ret. WOJG. Served with the U.S. Army on Peleliu, Wildcats 81st Infantry, 323rd Service Unit. He returned to the island in the 70's after his retirement of 32 years of service with the Army, and with the aid of the natives found the Memorial the soldiers had erected there, with the words cut out of old tanks "least we forget those who died here." While there he had the honor of meeting Admiral Crowe, USN, who encouraged him to renew the old monument. He took on the responsibility of raising donations from the survivors of his company to purchase new brass letters for the monument. The USN C.B.'s made the letters and transported them to Peleliu. The U.S. Marines were invited for the occasion. Before his untimely death in 1988, he returned to the island many times and was also invited by the USN for the christening of the ship, the USS Peleliu.

Spent approx. 6 months in Brooke Army Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. Note: This is my father. He would never talk much about his experiences. BURKE, Francis T. His life story was broadcast on a local radio station in Scranton, Pa. His position was attacked and he was bayoneted in the head. During his time in the Marines he won the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Service Cross and the Silver Star in addition to the purple heart. He won a battlefield commission. He is now deceased. His cousin Girard Gaughan would like to hear from anyone who was there.

This was possibly the shortest bombing hop in history: 1100 yards from takeoff to target. Called "Nose" by his fellow pilots Cantrell has just published a fine Memoir of his WWII experience entitled Friends, Dear Friends, and Heroes. He now lives in Springfield, Missouri. He was 16 years of age and was to see many more battles before his dischard on Dec. 7, 1945. Hid date of birth is 7/26/28. He was in boot training in July of 1943 at the San Diego Recruit Depot. His overseas service was from February 1944 to October 1944, serving at Noumea, New Caledonia, and Peleliu, Palau Islands. After service in Noumea, he was assigned to the 1st Marine Division prior to the assault on Peleliu. George is retired and living in Pass Christian, Mississippi. CHILDRESS, Hugh, PFC. Came ashore with the second wave, heard the tank battle at the airfield and saw the aftermath shortly thereafter when his AA unit moved onoto the captured airfield. He made his first combat landing at Cape Gloucester, with several smaller skirmishes afterwards. After the war he went to mortuary college, having earned his high school diploma all over again as his records were destroyed in a fire. He rose to vice president and general manager of one of the most successful funeral home conglomerates in the north Texas area. He was a district governor for the Lions Club and helped found the lighthouse for the blind. Served a Mount Martha, Australia, Brisbane, Goodenough Island, Milne Bay, New GUinea, Cape Glouster, New Britain, Pavuvu, Russell Island, Peleliu, back to Pavuvu, Okinawa and on to China, stationed at Tientsin, and left on my 21st brithday after 32 months to go back to the States. I made the landing 14 Sept 1944 on Peleliu, first part of the second wave, amongst many mangled Marine bodies that didn't make it to the beach. I got hit the second morning by mortar before dawn, along with many other Marine buddies who also got it the same day, some making the supreme sacrifice. I got it again less than 2 weeks later, but by the grace of God I was the only survivor that got off a stretcher by myself, amongst many. I never regretted what we had to do. Marinehank@hotmail.com

I remembered his last name over these many years and recently confirmed his full name through the Navy's Medical Historian in Washinton D.C., a Mr. Hacula (202) 737-2300. Crain, MD. and he was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart on Peleliu and the Navy Cross on Okinawa. * CROWDER, Thurmon Eric, PFC. Rifleman. Co L, 3rd Bn, 322 Inf. 81st (Wildcat) Division. Landed on Anguar 9/14/44. WIA by Japanese party somewhere around 10/16/44. Missed Peleliu because of the wounds. Later fought on Leyte. He was a member of the occupation forces in Japan. As of 2001, he is 76 years old and lives in Shannon, GA. Contact: tecrowder2000@msn.com

CULLEN, Gerald F., Pvt. Commended for courageous conduct while operating Sixteenth Field Depot vehicles to and from front lines, often under hostile fire, during the operation against the enemy at Peleliu.
CULLEN, William H., PFC - 6th Amphib. Tractor Battalion - One of the "engineers" who volunteered in relief on the 1st Regiment. Assigned to combat sniper duty on the western side of Bloody Nose with the objective of preventing the enemy from escaping west out of The Pocket, down the mountainside, across the West Road, and into the relative safety of the yet-to-be-cleared "swamp" (the centuries-old Palauan taro farm at Ngerchol) - Retired and living in Concord, CA.
CULPEPPER, Semion William (S.W.), Sgt 81st Infantry Division, (Wildcats) 323 Regiment, Company G. Light Mortar Crewman Squad Leader, participated in landings at Ulithi atoll, Angaur and Peleliu, New Caledonia and Leyte. He was also stationed at Honshu Air Force Base in occupied Japan. After his discharge he returned to Georgia and his wife and the infant son he had never seen. S.W. a farmer and a machinist until his death 17 June 1993. Family contact: supepper@nlamerica.com

CUNNINGHAM, Jack, Corporal. Jeep driver with 81st Wild Cat Division. Landed on Anguar and a few days later on Peleliu with the 321st Infantry Battalion. Now lives in Alabama.

* CUSHING, Robert, PFC. 1st Marines, 2nd Bn, G Company. Landed on White Beach on D-1. He was wounded on Sept. 19th, blinded by a mortar shell, and was evacuated to San Diego. He finally got his sight back after 29 days. In 1987 his son went back with him to Peleliu. They spent 6 days there sharing time and his memories.
