THOMAS, Kit C., Sgt. A member of the 81st Wildcat Division and the Headquarters Battery 318th Field Artillery Battalion, of which he was a T4 radio repairman. Also served during Anguar. After leaving the service in August 1945, he resided in Ada, OK until his death on 3/4/85. His son Paul Thomas would be interested in hearing from any of the other men in the 81st who might have either known his Dad or who could tell him more about their own time there. He trained at Parris Island and New River and shipped into the Pacific in August, 1942. There he saw action on Guadalcanal and at Cape Gloucester. He also was in Australia, New Zealand and in the Russells before his last action on Peleliu Island in the Palau group. THOMPSON, Elton "Mutt", CPL, USMC. Field Radio Operator with the 1st Signal Company, 1st Marine Division. Landed on Peleliu D-Day morning, September 15, 1944. He was assigned to the 1st Regiment where he served until that unit was evacuated due to horrendous casualties. He was taken aboard the Hospital Transport, USS Pinckney, with the survivors of the terribly mauled First Marine Regiment about October 1st. The 1st Regiment lost most of their radiomen as they were nearing the beach when a Japanese mortar landed in their landing craft. On Peleliu the Japanese had direction finders and could pinpoint the radiomen every time they keyed up a radio. They rained mortars down on them night and day for the first several days. As a result of this total terror, in the late 1980's the V.A. rated Elton 100% service connected disabled due to post traumatic stress disorder. He had to give up his law practice in the mid-80's because of his condition. Elton was just 17 when he volunteered for service. He came from abject poverty, but went on to college and law school after the war. He has a son and a granddaughter who are lawyers--three generations of lawyers. Elton may be reached at P.O. TINSLEY, John R. WMF-121. He was on Peleliu from September 15, 1944 until the end. He attended the 50th reunion in 1994. John is 88 years old (2002), having been one of the oldest Marines on the island during the invasion. He recently suffered a stroke, but is recoveirng well. TROSSEN, Clyde A., Sgt. Served with VMF 121 as a metal smith. He and his fellow VMF 121 ground crew personnel were sent ashore on the third day and told to prepare for their F4 Corsairs to arrive. He and his fellow VMF Marines carried food, water, and ammunition to some of the artillery crews, and carried wounded back. He remained on the island until after the end of the war and was sent home on the USS Pennsylvania. Originally from Sheboygan, WI, Clyde now lives in South Bend, IN. + VAN CLEVE, Floyd, PFC. Radio Operator with the forward observer teams in the 3rd Armored Amphibian Bn. He directed fire from the 155 MM Howitzers and 155 MM Long TOms, for the infantry. He was killed in the ravine that went up to Bloody Nose Ridge during the afternoon of D-Day + 4, September 19, 1944.
+VALENTINO, Michael, Cpl. - 1st Platoon, A Company, 710th Tank Battalion, 81st Inf. Div. - One of four tank crewmen who, along with Capt. H.W. Jones of the 7th Marine Regiment, were killed on Oct. 18, 1944 when their Sherman hit a mine or unexploded shell on Hill 210, Bloody Nose Ridge while directing fire at enemy caves. To this day, the tank lies in place where it was hit. On Sept. 15, 2000, a memorial plaque embossed with the names of Cpl. Valentino and his fellow crewmen was dedicated at the tank site.

+ VANDERGRIFF, Marshall Morris, Co. L, 3rd Bn, 7th Marine, First Marine Division, from January 7, 1944 through May 4, 1945. Participated in the Battles of Cape Gloucester and Peleliu prior to his participation in the taking of Okinawa. Cpl. Vandergriff (as squad leader), Third Platoon, Company L, Third Squad was killed on Okinawa by a bomb blast along with 8 other men in the squad. He was buried in the First Marine Division Cemetery in Okinawa. His body was brought home and reburied in 1949 in Forest Park Garden of Gethsemani, Houston, Texas. Corporal Vandergriff's son was entitled to a copy of the Presidential Unit Citation with ribbon bar and star awarded the First Marine Division, Reinforced, for services on Rikykyu Islands and also the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal for his service in the Asiatic-Pacific Area. He also received the Purple Heart with Gold Star. VROEGINDEWEY, Adrian. 1st Marine Division. He was Almost run over by a tank that broke the line and rolled straight at him. He ran at the tank and ducked. The person in the tank thought he had Something on him to throw under the tank treads to blow the thing up, But he had nothing of the sort. His brother died in Italy.
