WALT, Lewis, Lt. Col. Company K, 3rd Bn, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Executive officer of the 5th Marines when the battle for Peleliu began. Also served with 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal and at Cape Gloucester. He had won the Navy Cross for heroism. He went on to serve in the Korean War and later in Vietnam where, as a lieutenant general, he commanded the III Marine Amphibious Corps for nearly 2 years. He retired as a general after serving as assistant commandant of the Marine Corps.
WALTERS, Robert W. Attached to HQ Bn of the 11th Marines. Peleliu was the first combat he saw. He was part of the fire direction control (FDC) unit and landed in the 7th wave on the first day. He later went on to Okinawa and then into China as part of the occupation force. He had 5 children and 11 grandchildren and lived in Williamsburg, VA. He passed away on 2/1/02. WEEKS, Virgil. Marine. His friend reports that he is 80 years old now and in poor health, but is still a scrapper. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, he was on a ship that was hit. WESTCOTT, Howard L., Major, Army 181st Infantry was assigned to Fight on Peleliu. It is unknown how long he was there because he and 5 others were chosen to go to New Guinea to locate two lost battalions of men on that island. They got to New Guinea and within a few hours after sneaking onto the island they found one battalion. Sometime within 48 hours of arriving on New Guinea, he was shot. westfork@sedona.net

Peleliu from September 15 - October 15, 1944, and in Okinawa from April 1 -July 15, 1945. My father retired from the Army in 1979 as a CW3, Signal Corps. He died October 26, 1991. Throughout his Army career, the ONLY combat service patch he wore was his USMC Guadalcanal "Big Red One". WHITES, Gene Neal. Twelfth Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion Fleet Marine Force, Pacific. Now deceased. Gene Neal Whites (born Eugene Nathan Whites) was the father of three children in December 1943. He was drafted and probably due to his family status, was discharged the same day. My father was not an extraordinary man -- not considered admirable by many, but he was moved to do his part, to get into the fight. His service record indicates that he "joined" and "transferred" from battalion to battalion until he finally was shipped into the thick of things. I suspect that he was a little disappointed when he figured out that the war was all but over and Peleliu was expected to be a cake-walk. I also suspect that he, like all his fellow Marines, were not prepared for the battle that awaited them. He was a man who always wanted to be somebody, but never made it. The Battle of Peleliu was recorded as one of the bloodiest of the Pacific campaign, but when he came home - long after the parades and cheering were done - nobody knew where in the world that speck of an island was and nobody cared. He was "entitled to wear an engagement star on the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon for participation in the capture and occupation of the Southern Palau Islands." Dad suffered from "battle fatigue". There was no treatment. Nobody understood. I don't think he ever got over it. This one's for you, dad. Your war-time kids, Phyllis Jean, Carol Ann, and Richard Eugene. WHILLOCK, Everett Andrew, Corporal. First Marine Division, 50 cal machine gunner. He Landed on Orange Beach. When he got there his gun crew was dead so he was assigned a bazooka to take out some of the 13 Japanese tanks at the airport. The battery was dead. He was MIA for a couple of days caught between Orange Beach and the airport. He visited the island with his son David in December of 1991, a bittersweet moment. Much of David's childhood was listening to stories about this island in the middle of the Pacific. Everett also beachheaded on Cape Gloucester and Tiensin as well as Okinawa. D.Whillock@tcu.edu

WILSON, Everett. Co. D 776th Amphibious Tank Bn., U.S. Army. Angaur/Peleliu was this unit's first operation. They then went on to serve at Leyte and Okinawa. The company left Fort Ord, CA with 150 troops and returned to the states with just 16. + WINKEL, Robert, PFC. An 18 year old BAR man, PFC Winkel was buried on Peleliu. His cousin has a picture of one of his buddies at his grave. The family was told that he was hit by mortar fire early and was taken to a beach first aid area. Apparently the Japanese broke through and he and others were bayoneted as they were waiting for evaluation.

* WOODYARD, Wayland Deloss, Lt., USMC. Company K, 3rd Bat., 1st Marines. Killed in action on September 18, 1944. He was the son of Lovisa Hannah and Otto J. Woodyard. Wayland was born in Waterloo, IA on July 7, 1916. His cousin Eric, who was 5 at the time, remembers his mother and her sisters crying when they got word of his death. The story he had heard was that Wayland's unit was pinned down on or near the beach by weapons fire from a Japanese pillbox, but exactly how he died is not known. Eric writes, "He was a handsome young man and his life was cut short as were many other young men. May they all rest in peace." WORSWICK, Henry "Hank", PFC - 306th Engineering Battalion, 81st Inf. Division "Wildcats" - Originally from Tennessee, Hank is the only known veteran of the Palau campaign to have taken his discharge in the field. He has lived in Palau and Yap since the end of the war and has numerous children and grandchildren living in the islands. The Palau government made him an honorary citizen in the mid-1980's. He presently resides in Koror, Palau.
WRIGHT, Charlie. Served with the 81st. Division, 321 Regiment rifle Company at Anguar and Peleliu. He was wounded twice, once in mid-September and again in mid-October. He also saw action in The Phillipines and the occuation of Japan. He often mentioned serving with a ranger "attachment". He is my father and he died on October 10, 1992. YOUNG, Eugene J., PhM2/c, USNR. Eugene was a Navy Corpsman assigned to the 12thAA Battalion. He landed on Peleliu on September 15th, 1944, and remained until October, 1945 when he was assigned to the 6th Marine Division and sent to Tsingtao, China. "Until our guns could come ashore, I spent the early days of the invasion with the 5th Regiment. To this day my vanity license plate is PELELIU and it saddens me that so few know its meaning." YOUNGFIELD, Harold D., PFC. Mortarman. 81st Infantry. He lost his right hand on 10/11/44 at Anguar returning an incoming grenade from a foxhole, and earned the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was shipped back to Utah, and discharged in April of 1945 after a stay in a recuperation hospital where he met his wife. He was originally from Denver, and Youngfield Street in Denver was named after him and his brother, who fought in Germany. He is living in Utah. His family may be reached at JParker@davispartner.com
